Nutrition and Fitness After Bariatric Surgery

Diet & Exercise After Surgery

Undergoing bariatric surgery is a significant step towards achieving long-term weight loss and improved health. However, to maximise the benefits, it’s crucial to follow a tailored diet and exercise plan.

Dr Jason Free and his team at Surgery Gold Coast emphasise the importance of combining surgical success with sustainable lifestyle changes.

Post-Surgery Nutrition

After bariatric surgery, the stomach’s reduced size means nutrient-dense foods become essential to meet your body’s needs.

Accredited Practicing Dietitian Katie Harris from Shape Nutrition explains, nutrition after surgery involves prioritising protein, vitamins, and minerals while reintroducing foods gradually.

“Post-operative nutrition requires careful planning to ensure patients get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals, while gradually reintroducing foods to prevent discomfort or complications,” Katie says.

The post-surgery diet typically progresses in stages:

  1. Fluids (Weeks 1–2): Patients start with clear fluids to allow the stomach to heal.
  2. Pureed Foods (Weeks 3–4): Nutrient-rich, soft foods such as pureed vegetables and protein shakes.
  3. Soft Foods (Weeks 5–6): Gradual reintroduction of soft, easily digestible foods.
  4. Regular Diet (Week 7 Onward): Focus on small, balanced meals rich in protein and low in sugar and fats.

Formulite, a meal replacement brand recommended by Dr Free, offers a range of products designed to support bariatric patients.

“Formulite provides the perfect balance of protein, fibre, and essential nutrients, helping patients maintain energy levels while adjusting to their new dietary habits,” Katie says.

“Other high-quality options include BN Multivitamins, which cater specifically to bariatric needs.”

Exercise post Surgery

Sustained Success Through Exercise

Exercise plays a pivotal role in maintaining weight loss and improving overall health after surgery.

“Even light activities, like walking, can accelerate recovery, boost energy, and improve mood,” Dr Free says.

“Gradual progression is important, starting with short walks and building up to more intense activities like strength training and cardiovascular exercises under professional guidance.”

Practical Tips for Success

  • Stay Hydrated: Sip water regularly but avoid drinking during meals to prevent overfilling your smaller stomach.
  • Monitor Portion Sizes: Use small plates and bowls to manage portions and avoid overeating.
  • Focus on Protein: Prioritise protein-rich foods to support healing and muscle maintenance.
  • Incorporate Light Exercise: Gradually add low-impact activities like walking to your routine to aid recovery, boost energy, and support weight-loss.
  • Follow Up Regularly: Maintain regular appointments with your dietitian, surgeon, and other healthcare providers to track progress and address any concerns.

Long-Term Commitment

Bariatric surgery is a tool, not a cure. Success requires lifelong commitment to healthy eating, regular exercise, and ongoing support from a multidisciplinary team.

“With the right mindset and support, bariatric patients can achieve incredible results, improving both their physical and emotional well-being,” Dr Free says.
